The hidden cost of dysregulation: what chronic stress is quietly taking from your health, wealth, and business

There’s a version of you that’s functioning. Hitting most of your targets. Showing up to calls, delivering for clients, keeping the wheels turning.

And there’s something underneath that that you don’t talk about much. The fatigue you can’t fully explain. The decisions that felt right in the moment but didn’t pan out. The way your best ideas seem to come when you’re in the shower or on a walk — never at your desk when you actually need them.

You’ve probably chalked this up to the nature of entrepreneurship. The price of ambition. The cost of building something real.

But here’s what I want you to consider: what if it isn’t the cost of building? What if it’s the cost of building while chronically dysregulated?

Your nervous system has one job: keep you safe.

It does this by constantly scanning your environment — your inbox, your bank account, your calendar, your client messages — and deciding whether you’re safe right now or whether you need to mobilize. When it perceives a threat (real or imagined, physical or psychological), it activates your stress response: a cascade of hormones and physiological changes designed to help you fight, flee, or freeze.

In an acute situation — a car that cuts you off, a sudden loud noise — this is a beautiful system. It’s fast, it’s effective, and when the threat passes, it settles back down.

But for most founders and high-achievers, the nervous system never gets the all-clear. The threat isn’t a lion — it’s a proposal you haven’t sent, a launch that didn’t convert, a team member who’s struggling, a slow month. These threats don’t resolve in a moment. They persist. They layer on top of each other.

And when the nervous system stays activated for long enough — weeks, months, years — it stops being a response and starts being a baseline.

That’s dysregulation. Not falling apart. Not a breakdown. Just a nervous system that’s been on alert for so long it doesn’t know how to stand down.

But here’s something worth sitting with: for some of you, this isn’t something that happened to you over time. It’s something your nervous system actively learned.

Therapist and Polyvagal Theory educator Deb Dana writes about this in her book Anchored — the idea that for many of us, dysregulation didn’t creep in; we were conditioned into it. When your early environment — a childhood home, a school system, a first job — consistently rewarded hypervigilance, the nervous system made a sensible adaptation. It began to treat the activated, always-on, high-alert state not as danger, but as readiness. As capability. As safe.

For a lot of high-achievers, that pattern got reinforced over and over again. You pushed harder and things happened. You stayed late and got promoted. You said yes to everything and built a reputation. The nervous system took note: activation equals results equals safety. Keep doing this.

Which means what feels like your drive, your standards, your edge — might also be a deeply conditioned survival pattern wearing the clothes of ambition. That’s not a criticism. It’s one of the most important things you can understand about yourself as a founder. Because a pattern you can see is a pattern you can work with. One you can’t see runs the show.

And it costs you more than you think.

Let’s start with the body, because everything else lives downstream of it.

Chronic stress keeps cortisol — your primary stress hormone — elevated well beyond its useful window. In short bursts, cortisol sharpens your focus, quickens your reflexes, and mobilizes your energy. Over time, it disrupts sleep, suppresses immune function, elevates inflammation, and creates a cascade of physical symptoms that are easy to normalize when they arrive gradually.

Founders often describe this as feeling tired but wired. Exhausted at the end of the day but unable to fully rest. Catching every cold that goes around. Relying on caffeine to function and sleep aids to wind down.

None of this is a character flaw. It’s biology. Your body is responding exactly as designed to a threat load that never clears.

But the physical depletion is only part of the story.

Chronic stress also impairs the prefrontal cortex — the part of your brain responsible for strategic thinking, emotional regulation, creativity, and nuanced decision-making. When you’re dysregulated, the cognitive functions that make you good at what you do are literally less available to you. You’re running your business on reduced capacity — and because you’re still functioning, you probably don’t know it.

This is where dysregulation gets expensive.

Every significant business decision — who to hire, what to price, when to launch, where to invest, which opportunities to pursue — requires the precise cognitive resources that chronic stress degrades.

Decision fatigue is dysregulation’s most costly symptom. Research consistently shows that the quality of our decisions deteriorates under sustained cognitive load. When your nervous system is managing a background threat all day, it’s spending resources. By the time you reach an important call or contract at 4pm, you’re working with less than you have.

The downstream effects on revenue are real:

Under-charging because raising your prices feels dangerous rather than strategic. Saying yes to the wrong clients because the proposal was there and saying no felt risky. Delaying a launch because it never feels quite ready — perfectionism as a protection mechanism. Making an impulsive investment to solve a problem that’s actually a nervous system pattern. Not following up on warm leads because the potential rejection feels too costly to risk.

These aren’t sales problems. They aren’t mindset problems. They’re nervous system responses that happen to occur in a business context.

Your revenue ceiling is partly set by your nervous system’s capacity for risk, novelty, visibility, and expansion. When the nervous system is in survival mode, it pulls toward safety — and safety in business often looks like staying small.

The health and wealth costs are significant. But there are losses that don’t show up in your metrics.

The quality of your presence with clients. The creative capacity to think laterally and solve problems in ways that set you apart. The long-term vision that lets you build something with real depth rather than just reacting to whatever’s most urgent. The joy in the work — the reason you started this in the first place.

When the nervous system is chronically dysregulated, resources get allocated toward survival. Everything else — creativity, connection, vision, pleasure — gets rationed.

This is what “your body is your business plan” actually means. Not that you need to meditate every morning or never have a stressful week. But that the state of your nervous system is the infrastructure every other business strategy runs on.

A brilliant marketing plan implemented by a depleted, dysregulated founder produces different results than the same plan implemented by someone operating from genuine regulation. The strategy is identical. The body executing it is not.

If you’ve been nodding along to this, I want to offer you something before you close this tab and go back to your to-do list.

This isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s not a new system to implement or another habit to maintain. The first step is simply understanding what’s actually happening in your nervous system right now — what state you’re operating from, what it costs you, and what becomes possible from a different baseline.

I created the Stress State Assessment for exactly this moment. It takes about five minutes and gives you a clear picture of which stress pattern is most dominant for you right now — and what that means for how you’re showing up in your business.

Because you can’t regulate a state you can’t see. And you can’t build the business you actually want from a nervous system that’s been in survival mode for years.

The hidden cost of dysregulation isn’t inevitable. But it is worth looking at.
