THE WEALTHY CEO LAB® PODCAST | SEASON 1, EPISODE 2
Most entrepreneurs are waiting to feel confident before they act like a CEO. Here’s why that’s backwards — and the three shifts that actually work.
I heard a quote recently that stopped me cold: confidence is not something you find, it’s something you build.
I know. It sounds simple. Maybe even obvious. But something about hearing it out loud, in that particular moment, completely reoriented how I think about confidence — in business, and in my own life.
For a long time, I operated on the assumption that confidence was a destination. That one day, once I had enough revenue, enough clients, enough external proof that I was doing this right, I would finally feel it. Then I’d be ready to show up fully. Then I’d be ready to lead.
But nothing external ever gives you confidence. The only thing that does is taking consistent, intentional action — even when you’re scared, even when you don’t feel ready, even when part of you wants to wait for a sign that it’s safe.
The skiing lesson I didn’t expect
The day after I heard that quote, I went skiing. Learning to ski in your mid-30s is genuinely humbling — and for the past few seasons I had been stuck on this quiet plateau, telling myself that I just needed to trust myself more and eventually something would click.
It didn’t click. Because I was waiting for confidence to show up before I was willing to do the scary thing on the slope.
After hearing that quote, something shifted. I stopped waiting. I leaned in, did the hard thing, and started actually building the confidence I’d been standing around hoping to find.
Business works the same way. No one is coming to save you. There’s no magic moment where everything suddenly clicks and you feel 100% ready. The readiness comes from the doing — from showing up daily, making bold decisions, trusting your intuition, and moving forward even when your stomach is in knots.
That’s what stepping into your CEO identity actually looks like.
“Confidence is not something you find. It’s something you build — one intentional decision at a time.”
The 3 mindset shifts every CEO must make
In Episode 1, we talked about the decision to step into your CEO identity. This episode is about the internal rewiring that makes that decision stick. Here are the three shifts that change everything.
Shift 1: From scarcity to abundance
A scarcity mindset operates from fear. Fear that there aren’t enough clients, enough money, enough opportunities — so you cling to what you have even when it doesn’t feel aligned, and you hesitate to invest, to price profitably, or to make bold moves.
An abundance mindset trusts that there is always more. More aligned clients. More opportunities. More growth available. And when you genuinely believe that, you stop making decisions from a contracted, defensive place — and start making them from confidence.
A practical check: have you ever said yes to an opportunity that felt off because you were afraid nothing better would come along? That’s scarcity talking. The shift isn’t about toxic positivity or pretending reality isn’t real. It’s about trusting that your work has value, that aligned clients exist, and that you don’t have to take everything just to survive.
Shift 2: From seeking external validation to trusting your intuition
CEOs don’t ask for permission. They decide.
If you’re constantly waiting for approval before you move — waiting to see how the market responds, waiting for someone to tell you your idea is good enough, waiting until your audience is bigger — you’re giving your power away one hesitation at a time.
Here’s what I tell my clients: if you have the vision, you already have everything you need to materialize it. The vision doesn’t arrive without the capacity to build it. Trusting your intuition isn’t blind optimism — it’s learning to be your own best guide, while doing the inner work to release the limiting beliefs that make that feel dangerous.
A common version of this: delaying a launch because you’re worried about what people will think, or because your audience doesn’t feel “big enough” yet. The question to ask instead: what does my highest CEO self believe about this? Follow that.
Shift 3: From avoiding decisions to leading through them
A struggling entrepreneur waits for clarity before making a decision. A CEO creates clarity by making one.
Indecision feels safe, but it’s one of the most expensive habits in business. When you wait for all the information to arrive before you move, you lose time, momentum, and the learning that only comes from actually doing the thing.
A wrong decision is better than no decision. At least with action, you gain data. You can course-correct. You can grow.
When I made my first big investment in my business, I was scared. What if it didn’t work? What if it was a waste? But standing still wasn’t the answer either. I leaned in, made the decision, and grew from it — regardless of whether it was objectively the best move. The growth came from the decision itself.
“A struggling entrepreneur waits for clarity before making a decision. A CEO creates clarity by making one.”
Two exercises to start implementing today
Mindset shifts don’t happen from reading about them. They happen from doing the work — consistently, in small ways, every day. Here are two practices to try this week.“A struggling entrepreneur waits for clarity beforemaking a decision. A CEO creates clarity by making one.”
Exercise 1: Visualization
Find a quiet moment. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths until you feel settled.
Picture yourself one year from now as your wealthy CEO self. Let the images, feelings, and details arrive without forcing them.
Notice: What does a day in that life look like? How do you feel waking up? How do you make decisions? What are your non-negotiables? How do you take care of yourself?
Sit with it for a few minutes. When you’re ready, open your eyes — and let that version of you guide one decision you make today.
Exercise 2: Journaling prompt
“If I was already my wealthy CEO self — how would I think, act, and make decisions?”
Write out five specific ways you can start embodying that version of yourself today. Not next month. Today.
Remember: lasting change doesn’t come from dramatic overhauls. It comes from small actions, taken consistently, that compound into something unrecognizable over time.
Even something as simple as five minutes of breathing before you get out of bed — done daily — can shift your nervous system, your decisions, and your identity over six months.
Your one takeaway from this episode
Make one decision today as your next-level CEO self. It doesn’t have to be big. Audit your prices. Set a boundary you’ve been avoiding. Trust your gut on something you’ve been overthinking.
Just one step. That’s it. That’s where the momentum starts.
And if you want a structured way to do this work, I’ve put together a free Self Concept Blueprint — a worksheet that walks you through the mindset work and the daily actions that help you start embodying the wealthier, more confident version of yourself. The link is in the show notes.
